The King’s Speech: interviews with Christian Scientists

26th December 2010: the movie, ‘The King’s Speech’ was released nationally in Australia.  A Sydney Morning Herald article reports, ”As a Christian Scientist, Logue was passionate about healing, and perhaps this, coupled with his background in elocution, led to [his treatment of] returned servicemen who had speech disorders attributed to shell shock.”

I contacted John Cleary at 702 ABC Radio with information about a local author in Melbourne, Norman Hutchinson.  His book ‘Lionel Logue: The King’s Mentor’, tells the world about Logue’s life growing up in Australia, as a Christian Scientist.  Cleary’s interview with Hutchinson was aptly aired on Christmas Day, when the Queen’s Christmas Message was broadcast.  The podcast will be added to this blog as soon as it’s available.

GUEST VLOG: Daryl Francis interviews the author, Norman Hutchinson, on his mobile device; hence the array of background sounds — we love this ready technology!  Thank you, Daryl.

For interest: Speech Pathology of Australia mentions Norman Hutchinson’s book.

More from Daryl Francis on his blog ‘The King and Lionel’.

To me, this breakthrough in the movie coming to the forefront at this time in our history is very important. As a Christian Science student, I am always wondering why Christian Science is not out in the frontline of all media all the time with the bells and whistles blowing and celebrating the Truth, Life and Locve which it imparts to all of humanity.I get very excited about what it has done in my own life.

Growing up in Chicago, Illinois in the 1940-1960s Christian Science ws demonstrated in the community in which I lived. Our teachers, our superintendents, our governing townspeople uutilized these healing concepts within our commmunity and our lives flourished in every way. We had every benefit from this study every day.

I celebrate this movie and the writers and the actors for bringing this to the world’s attention at this critical time. It is a steppingstone Mrs. Eddy would cheer on regarding the beauty of this healing science; that it belongs to all people and it works .I am thankful that I have had work in the study of Christian Science, and am so grateful for the networking of peoplewho are demonstrating this daily and trying to bring it to the world again through their writing of books and their selfless dedication as practitoners and loving fellow travlers. With love and gratitude.

    • Thank you, Yolanda. It’s true that when something works for us, we get excited and want to tell the whole world. Especially when it relates to health. I think that over time some Christian Scientists have hidden their findings and testimonies. But more are realising that it’s okay to talk about it, and that the majority of people are so ready to think outside the material box. The old adage “the proof is in the pudding” still stands true. I’ve realised that everyone has to make the teachings their own, no matter how much reading and talking is done. Thanks, again!

  4. Dear Yolanda
It is great to see how love changes even the worst fears and troubles. It’s greater still to know it is because divine Love is governing and guiding, and through this Science we can help others. Thanks so much for sharing. It’s wonderful to hear about your son’s story.
Have a great day (*_*) Carey
